Why Volunteer at JA BizTown?

Why volunteer?

Before their arrival at JA BizTown, 4th-6th grade students are prepared to participate in a carefully designed simulation that closely resembles the real-life workplace. During their time at JA BizTown, students will be actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, expressing curiosity, solving problems, assuming responsibility, and constructing meaning. Your role as a volunteer is to recognize spontaneous opportunities for learning, sometimes called “teachable moments” and help students make sense of what they are experiencing. Many students walk into JA BizTown a little unsure or nervous about their new job, but at the end of the day they have a renewed belief in self and are excited about what they accomplished. As a volunteer, you get to help the students get a taste of the real-world!

What is my time commitment?

Time commitments vary depending on which training option you choose. Your options for training are:

  • 30 minutes of online training + 1 hour of on-site training the morning of the visit
  • 3 hours of on-site training prior to the visit

In addition to your training:

  • 5 hours of hours of assisting students in a JA BizTown business

What is provided to me?

  • Training – you will be provided with guidance from a JA staff member to know what to expect during the visit and how to assist the students
  • Content – you will have access to a Volunteer Guide inside your business with helpful documents including scripts, helpful hints, checklists and a schedule
  • Support – a JA staff member will be available throughout the visit to assist you with any issues or to answer any questions you may have.

What will I be doing with students?

  • During the school’s visit, you will work at one JA BizTown business, assisting a group of 4-10 students.
  • You will help ensure the safety and security of the students.
  • You will assist students in remaining on-task.
  • You will assist students with their personal checkbook activities throughout the day.
  • You will lead staff meetings for your group of students using the provided scripts.
  • You will allow the students to do their own work and encourage them to do their best.
